3 Free Modern Quilt Patterns from Moda and Art Gallery Fabrics

I love modern quilts, they allow for so much freedom and can be as simple or intricate as you want!

Some of my favourite modern quilt designers are Laura Preston of Vacilando Quilting Co., Amber of Alderwood Studio and Lindlee of Plains & Pine. I highly recommend checking out their patterns and stunning handmade goods, but sometimes a free one is what you're looking for. So, I have pulled together 3 of my favourite free pdf patterns for you, from fabric manufacturers Moda and Art Gallery Fabrics. The pdf patterns are all linked to the images in the post so you can just click an image and download the pattern.

If you're looking for fabrics for these gorgeous patterns I carry prints from Moda and AGF, available here

Modern quilts as explained by the Modern Quilt Guild (MQG) are:

"primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. "Modern traditionalism" or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting." (MQG)

Boro Woven Foundations for Moda Fabrics

Skill level: Confident beginner

I love this quilt pattern for how well it explains how to sew a flying geese block, which makes this pattern accessible to beginners.

Also, the triangles within this piece provide a great opportunity for using fabric scraps and up-cycling.

You can also check out my beginner flying geese tutorial here.
